Annotation The evolution of the European unity idea in Western Europe in the 1950s-1960s is considered. It was noted that a single Europe was a dream for many, and therefore the forms of state associations throughout its thousand-year political history had a large number – from the conquest to the creation of joint institutions for solving common problems. However, in the conditions of constant hostility of European countries, the idea of a united Europe had a special sound, the content of which, as a rule, is aimed at resolving the current conflict situation and achieving peace. This leading leitmotif of the ideas of a united Europe is not devoid of the stratification and context of the historical epochs in which they arose. A comprehensive analysis of the integration processes taking place in Europe is given. An excursion into the history of the development of European states is made, which allows to trace the stages of development and formation of integration processes in Western Europe and to determine the role of Germany in these processes. It is shown that the objective basis of integration processes in the period indicated is the tendency towards the internationalization of public life. The economic aspect of this trend is associated with a rapid increase in the volume of industrial production under the influence of scientific and technological progress and an even faster expansion of international trade. In the course of the theoretical analysis it was established that the development of integration processes occurred under the influence not only of economic factors. An important component of the overall integration process in Western Europe was political integration, which was important for the Federal Republic of Germany, as the state found itself in political isolation after the Second World War and integration became one of the chances of getting out of it
