Annotation It is shown that in the context of strengthening global communications and informatization of society, it is required to apply a more subtle instrument to the research of social communities and processes. It is established that the particularly acute problem presented is for the tourism sector, which is traditionally represented as one of the markers of globalization. It is revealed that, despite the fact that the tourist flows and their influence on the national and regional economy are paid enough attention in the world, the level and extent of involvement of certain local communities in the global tourism market, the transformations brought by tourist flows at the local level, and changes related to the development of technology (the Internet, mobile applications, cellular communications) remain poorly understood. It is noted that modern researchers of the tourism business are faced with the problem of the lack of reliable statistics on tourist flows and directions. It is noted that modern researchers of the tourism business are faced with the problem of the lack of reliable statistics on tourist flows and directions. It is found that there is a lack of information on the development of tourism in remote areas - this sector in Russia is almost not covered by major tour operators, and the high cost and complexity of logistics limit access by the research community. The necessity of investigating the stated problem is substantiated, expressed in the fact that independent and extreme tourism is gaining increasing popularity among tourists all over the world. It is argued that the study of this phenomenon is necessary not only to expand the understanding of the prospects for the development of tourism in Russia, but also to deepen the knowledge about tourism as a field of interaction between “globals” and “locals” (in the terminology of Z. Bauman) in world science. It is proposed to study tourism through the prism of the inhabited space, which allows to examine the everyday practices of tourists and host communities, their interaction and interrelations. As data for the analysis, field research data (interviews and observations of authors) were used in the Pribaikal district in 2008, in the Tofalaria of the Nizhneudinsk district in 2013 and in the Olkhonsk district of the Irkutsk region in 2014, 2016, 2017, Severobaikalsk region of the Republic of Buryatia in 2016 and 2017 and analysis of the content of the main Internet sites in Baikal, focused on servicing tourists
