Economic sanctions in recent decades have become one of the most desirable policy tools in the world and a suitable alternative to conventional wars, especially after World War II. One of the important and controversial consequences of the sanctions is the structural and significant transformation of the macroeconomic system and political economy of the target country. Iran, as one of the largest economies in West Asia, has undergone this transformation due to the experience of Western economic sanctions in recent decades. In this study, we will look at this issue in Iran. The main hypothesis of this study follows from the main research question “What impact did the economic sanctions of the West have on the political economy of Iran?” The results of this descriptive study show that Western economic sanctions have led to the development of an alternative import economy and an increase in the competitiveness of domestic goods relative to foreign goods. Based on the results of this study, proposals are presented such as promoting two goals: Iranizing the manufacturing economy and diversifying export and import markets |
