The article is devoted to the analysis of the Turkic factor in the foreign policy of Turkey in the context of the Syrian crisis. The Turkic factor is important for Turkish foreign policy. For the first time, Turkish authorities drew attention to the Middle Eastern Turks in the early 1990s, and since then Turkish diplomacy has been actively using this factor for foreign policy purposes.
It has been established, that Syria and Iraq, since gaining independence, have begun a policy of discrimination against Turkoman in their territories. One of the main reasons for this policy was the loyalty of this ethno-confessional group to Turkey. However, a comparative analysis allows us to state that the situation of the Syrian Turkomans by the beginning of the civil war was not as deplorable as in neighboring Iraq, but in the neighboring Iraq the Turkoman movement could not achieve success.
Syrian Turkomen were able to become a party to the conflict that Damascus will now have to reckon with. Obviously, the Syrian Turks, being a small ethno-confessional group, could not have achieved such success without the help of neighboring Turkey. Turkoman became a vehicle for Turkey’s interests in the Syrian crisis. It was found that the Turks of Syria had to take this step for a number of objective reasons, the main of which was the cultural and historical connection with neighboring Turkey and the inability to ensure their own security in a civil war. The result of the study is the identification of the main strategic goals of Turkish diplomacy in the context of the Turkoman movement in the Syrian crisis
