Annotation Mass media as a political institution in Indonesia in a historical aspect is considered. The Indonesian mass media were analyzed before the Republic of Indonesia appeared in 1945 and until the reformation period in 1998. It is noted that the mass media in Indonesia plays a certain role in each of the periods. Freedom of the media in Indonesia is said to have increased significantly since the end of President Suharto’s reign, the era of reform in 1998, when the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Communications monitored and controlled domestic media and restricted foreign media. The results of this study show: the link between Indonesian media history and political organization and mass mobilization; using the media as a propaganda tool; using the media as a free speech for the public; that the media in Indonesia is growing as fast as the current capitalization. It is shown that the media in Indonesia are developing steadily enough: print media are switching to electronic platforms; more and more media companies are showing steady growth. However, the author draws attention to the fact that the development of Indonesian media is not so significant compared with the education of the population. It is noted that infotainment television is developing very fast
