Annotation Compositional analysis of the Au-bearing clay sands from the placer deposits of Yenisei, Yakutia and Transbaikalia, including mineralogy and phase dispersion of cementing clays as well as size-by-size distribution of free gold. Effect of physical and mechanical properties of the clay pellets formed during sand washing on the Au losses with gravel and tailings from the dredge’s sluice box is described in the article. The clay sands were submitted to physical and chemical testing to evaluate their lithological and mineralogical composition. The scope included X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, X-ray spectroscopy, electron microscopy and petrographic analysis. The dominant minerals of the metal-bearing Yenisei, Yakutia and Transbaikal clay sands are hydromica, montmorillonite and kaolinite. The key reason for gold losses is pelletization of the free gold unrecoverable in the dredge’s gravity operation. There is a direct relationship between gold losses with pellets and washability of the hard-to-treat clay sands. The resource-saving concept is proposed as to reduce the losses by removing the clay at the head of the process as to avoid it’s going to the processing operations. Additionally, the host gangue minerals (clays and barren pebble rocks) can further be used as by-products by different industries. The recommendations were provided on further industrial use of the wastes obtained by separation of the clay precipitate from the suspended silty-clay particles and barren pebble rocks
