Annotation The article, based on the analysis of archival documents, characterizes one of the expressions of the religious policy of the Soviet government – the activities of the authorized Council of religious affairs under the Council of Ministers of the USSR in certain regions, on the example of the Chita region. In the Soviet Union, the Council for religious Affairs of the Council of Ministers of the USSR was responsible for the implementation of religious policy in relation to religions in the period from 1965 to 1991. It was formed as a result of the merger of the Council for the Russian Orthodox Church and the Council for religious Affairs. All this time his work in the regions was built through the activities of commissioners. The basis of the study was the reports of the authorized, correspondence with the Council, which are stored in the funds of the state archive of the Russian Federation (GARF). The author notes that, to date, the religious policy of the Soviet government in the Chita region as a whole, as well as the activities of the authorized Council for religious affairs in Soviet times, has not found a serious scientific analysis. There are practically no publications on the problems. At the same time, it was the activity of the commissioners that determined all religious processes in certain subjects of the RSFSR and other Soviet Socialist Republics. At the same time, the data on the Chi-tin region, discovered so far, do not allow to recreate the picture completely. This is due to the weak reporting on the region to the Council. However, even the available information gives an idea of both the religious situation in the Chita region during the activities of the authorized Council there, and the functionality, style of work of the authorized. This allows, to a certain extent, to characterize the religious policy of the Soviet government in one, separately, peripheral region. It is noted that further laborious work with sources on identification of new, not known, today, documents is required
