Annotation The article covers main features of “soft power” concept interpretation by Chinese scholars and elites. The fundamentals of “soft power” introduced by Josef Nye are described and compared with approaches existing in Chinese academic community. The ideas and statements forming the basis of “soft power” concept in Chinese environment are analyzed. Undoubtedly “soft power” now takes an important place in Chinese authorities’ political strategy. Despite the wide range of common features, western and Chinese approaches to “soft power” practice and research share major differences. Remarkably, Chinese researchers and politicians view “soft power” not only as a foreign policy tool, but also as a domestic instrument. Methodological basis of the article includes comparative analysis of “soft power” research in western and Chinese academic communities, analysis of Chinese politicians’ speeches and Chinese research papers. It is concluded that Chinese interpretation of Soft power has unique features, but is still in the process of formation, the independent scientific field is still developing.
