Annotation The agricultural specialization is considered as a possible direction of the economy development of industrialized regions on the example of the Volga Federal District. It is noted that the district strategy is aimed at improving the quality of life and diversifying economic activities in order to reduce risks and increase sustainability. The development directions of agricultural specialization as an alternative direction of diversification of the economy of the Volga Federal District are characterized. General scientific and special methods were used: economic and statistical analysis, systematization and generalization of the obtained results. It is concluded that the efficiency of agriculture depends on the rational distribution of production in the regions and farms, where favorable climatic and production conditions have been developed. It is noted that in Russia the growth rates of livestock and crop production in 2005–2016 amounted to more than three and five times, respectively, new technologies are being introduced, state support measures are being implemented. Favorable conditions have emerged for the formation of agricultural specialization in the Volga Federal District. Production of agricultural products shows a steady growth, therefore, special conditions are needed for the further production development based on new technologies that contribute to the achievement of qualitative and quantitative results. The recommendations aimed at improving the efficiency of agricultural specialization and creating favorable conditions for the development of the business environment of agricultural territories are given.
