Annotation The article discusses the Chinese government and the media reaction on the visit of the XIV Dalai Lama to Mongolia in November 2016, and the significance of this visit for the Mongolian society and the state. Contemporary international relations are mostly of a secular character, and it may seem that the inter-state conflicts on religious grounds have become long ago a matter of distant history. However, as practice shows, in modern international relations, religion continues to play a significant role, even in such “non-radical” in the religious sense, regions like northeast Asia, where the dominant power is China. The position of the People’s Republic of China in international relations can be summarized as follows: the current leaders of the country considering a peaceful foreign policy to be a guarantee of political stability and economic prosperity of the country, follows the instructions of Deng Xiaoping expressed in the famous formula of “avoid light, prefer the shadows”. However, this foreign policy tactics does not mean that China will hold restraint, if there will be the infringement of its interests. Actively participating in international affairs, China is acting more decisively in respect of actions, which in the opinion of the Chinese leadership are contrary to the interests of the country. Such political tendencies of China are vividly manifested in resonant events, such as the visit of the Dalai Lama to Mongolia
