Annotation The article is devoted to the study of the nationalism phenomenon as an ideology and political practice. The purpose of the study is to reveal the ambivalent nature of nationalism, to identify its inherent properties, to analyze the conditions and factors contributing to the formation of a nationalist worldview. The object of the study is the contradictory content of the nationalism ideology, the subject of the study is the consideration of the nationalism phenomenon as an ideological and political construct. The objective of the research is to reveal the semantic content of nationalism, the relevance of nationalist tendencies and attitudes to the social and political realities of the modern world. The author has used dialectical principles of objectivity, consistency, concreteness, as well as general scientific (analysis, synthesis, comparison) and theoretical (idealization, abstraction) methods that allow to implement the tasks. Attention is drawn to the ideas of national exclusivity and superiority that feed nationalism, which form a wide range of national feelings of a negative nature. A comparative analysis of the concepts of nationalism and patriotism is carried out; the socio-political prerequisites contributing to the appeal to the nationalist ideology are investigated. The nature of the political consequences of nationalism is traced, the mechanism of its impact on collective and individual consciousness, on ethnic identity and national identity is revealed. Nationalism is considered as an instrument of political influence, as a means of realizing national interests. The risks of nationalism for the existence of society are revealed, the connection of nationalism with manifestations of discrimination, xenophobia, extremism is traced, and their destabilizing effect on the entire field of social relations is revealed. The essence of various ideologies and mythologies arising on the basis of nationalism, destroying the fabric of socio-political and national life and negatively affecting the functioning of social institutions, is investigated.
