The article examines the current aspects of the modern sports politicization on
the example of the 2015–2022 event series, during which unprecedented restrictions
(sanctions) were imposed against the Russian Federation in terms of their scale
and intensity, preventing Russian athletes from participating in international sports
competitions. A new stage of the restrictions imposed against Russian athletes has
turned out to be associated with the beginning of a special military operation on the
territory of the Ukraine. The increasing political pressure on Russian athletes and
Russian sports organizations raises the question of politics penetration into modern
sports and the use of restrictions in the field of admission to sports competitions as
an instrument of geopolitical struggle. In this regard, it is advisable to consider ways
to neutralize these negative processes and return the full participation of Russian
athletes and Russian sports organizations in the international Olympic movement. The
object of the study is the totality of international sports relations arising in the sphere
of the introduction of restrictive measures (sanctions) as a means of political influence
on individual states and sports organizations. The subject of the study is international
sports sanctions against Russia aimed at limiting the participation of Russian athletes
in the international sports movement. The methodology of the research is based
on the use of the resources of event analysis, content analysis, general scientific
methodology (analysis, synthesis, inductive-deductive method), the principle of
objectivity. The author concludes that the only full-fledged tool for achieving the goal of
lifting sanctions by international sports organizations remains the possibility of judicial
and legal counteraction to these sanctions. In the light of the events of 2022, the need
to develop a system of priorities for the implementation of the policy of the Russian
state in the field of lifting sanctions against Russian athletes is being actualized. In
this regard, there is a need to adopt guiding documents defining the strategy of the
country’s sports diplomacy. This challenge should become an organizing impulse that
will consolidate the efforts of state bodies to achieve national interests in this area. |
