Annotation In the article the authors examine electoral cultures of two countries — Russia and the US. The comparative analysis of electoral cultures of Russia and the US has showed the specifics of this event in both socio-cultural environments. Americans usually have an active political standing, they seek to understand the current political events and defend their electoral rights. The high level of political consciousness has made US election campaigns cater to rational electoral choices of citizens through broad use of rational communication techniques between the candidates and the constituents. Russians, on the other hand, usually do not wish to spend time and effort trying to immerse into the election campaign. Electoral choices of Russian citizens are not sufficiently explained, and are, to a large measure, emotional. Russian electoral campaigns use manipulative political technologies with few rational approaches. American constituents are also more pragmatic while Russians do not see any benefits from taking part in the election. This lowers their motivation to make a conscious electoral decision, thus turning elections into a formality. Russian citizens do not pay attention to the candidate’s program, they look more into personalities than programs or parties’ candidates belong to. For Americans, the ideological platform of the leader, and a detailed program for development of state, plays an important role in their electoral preferences. Russia and the US have different approaches to preferred leadership styles. To win, American politicians must present themselves as servants of the people, while in Russia patriarch-style leaders are preferred. The article provides reasons for appearance of these differences
