Annotation Currently, there is a significant interdisciplinary interest in studying of single-industry towns. Single-industry municipalities have become a special object of study because of their particular importance in general regional development, especially against the backdrop of the growing necessity in implementation the transition of the Russian economy to an innovative type. The study of the problems of single-industry towns is not Russian specific. An analysis of foreign sources has shown that studies of American municipalities that depend on one enterprise are pioneering in this field. The research is especially relevant in the context of strengthening the state’s attention to the problems of municipal entities of this type. The article describes the genesis of the « single-industry town» category. The definitions of the terms «monoprofile», «single-industry», «monofunctional» and others are analyzed. According to the results of the study there is a conclusion about the lack of agreement in the scientific community, in connection with which an attempt is made to give the author’s characteristic of this concept
