Annotation It is stated that in the course of evolution Canadian federalism made its way from a super-centralized model to one of the most decentralized in the world. However, trends towards decentralization are invariably accompanied by centralized sentiments of Canadian government and population, which suggest the existence of diverse and contradictory tendencies, the clash of centrifugal and centripetal forces such as integration and disintegration, strengthening of the Federal government and the development of Canadian provinces regionalism. The main theoretical approaches to the explanation of the reasons for the decentralized forces growth in Canadian federation (institutional, constitutional, sociological, and economic) are examined. It is revealed that Quebec and its requirements for «special status» recognition within Canadian federation still remains the main centrifugal force. However, the analysis of theoretical approaches shows the existence of other objective and subjective factors determining the development of decentralization in Canada. The necessity of integrated consideration of all available factors is proved to be important, because only in this case it is possible to estimate the dynamics of development and changes that occur in the state. The practical significance of the work lies in the possibility of using the research results as tools for further work in the field of Canadian federalism
Key words federalism; centralization; decentralization; centrifugal forces; centripetal forces; federal-provincial relations; Canada; Quebec; factor analysis; Political leader
